Ohio uses a child support formula; however, there are nuances in the formula that our lawyers understand. There is also the opportunity to deviate from the formula based on specific facts, such as if one parent is paying a lot of the child’s expenses or has a high cost in traveling for parenting time. If you are in court and the court is determining child support, your lawyer can present reasons for deviation.
Child support is a court-ordered payment made by one parent to the other to help cover the costs of raising a child. These payments are intended to provide for the child's basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, and educational services. The starting point in determining child support is applying the Ohio Child Support Guidelines, which is a formula. However, it is often not black and white, and arguments can be made to deviate from the guidelines or even the incomes that are used.
